The Kids Are All Right is the heartfelt new comedy from acclaimed director Lisa Cholodenko, starring Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, and Mark Ruffalo. Two teenaged children (Alice in Wonderland’s Mia Wasikowska and Journey to the Center of the Earth’s Josh Hutcherson) get the notion to seek out their biological father and introduce him into the family life that their two mothers (Bening and Moore) have built for them. Once the donor (Ruffalo) is found, the household will never be the same, as family ties are defined, re—defined, and re—re—defined. The New York Times raves that it’s “a generous, nearly note—perfect portrait of a modern family,” and Entertainment Weekly calls the movie “funny, smart and sexy!”

As a child actor, Josh Hutcherson got his break in family-friendly fare such as The Polar Express (2004), Bridge to Terabithia (2007), and Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008). But in Lisa Cholodenko’s new summer comedy The Kids Are All Right, he finally gets togrow up, playing the son of a same-sex couple (Julianne Moore and Annette Bening), who tries to convince his sister (Mia Wasikowska) to help him find their sperm-donor dad (Mark Ruffalo). The 17-year-old Kentucky-born Hutcherson was 4 when he announced to his parents that he was going to be an actor, and although he’s been working since he was 9, he still holds a rather ingenuous view of fame: “It magnifies who you are, just as long as you don’t let it change you,” he says. Hutcherson’s favorite off-camera role is playing host to friends at his L.A. pad. “It’s like a small hostel,” he admits. “People just come over.” Most nights, Hutcherson whips up his signature “Hutch” burger—“a masterpiece” of meat, jalapeños, and aged cheese. Hutcherson needs the fuel for his other hobbies: soccer, kickboxing, tumbling, and free-running. Later this year, he’ll get a chance to showcase his athletic chops in the highly anticipated reboot of the 1984 Commie-invasion cult classic Red Dawn, in which he will play Robert, the character played by C. Thomas Howell in the original.
